Dental implants replace teeth you may be missing, due to injury or disease. If you hide your smile because of missing teeth or have uncomfortable dentures, ask Dr. Marra and his team if implants could be an option for you.
When are implants needed?
Typically, implants are used due to personal preference – because you want to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Even if the missing tooth doesn’t show, an implant can provide structure and support for other teeth, which keeps your whole mouth more healthy by preventing the jawbone from shrinking. Missing teeth can make you look older, because your face may sag without that support. Implants can also provide support for dentures -they can help keep dentures or partials from slipping when you’re eating or even talking.
What is in an implant?
Implants are made of lightweight titanium and are surgically placed into the upper or lower jaw, to provide that needed support. A single implant replaces the root of the tooth, and then the implant is topped with a crown.
What is the process to get an implant?
If you’re getting a single tooth replaced with an implant, the procedure can take as little as a few days. The implant surgery may only take one day, but then it will be topped with a crown, which can take a few days to be manufactured. If you’re replacing several teeth, if could take months. As you heal, your jawbone will grow around the implant and support it. Dentists suggest you completely heal before getting your permanent crown
